Beaufort West has been identified as a Human Trafficking hotspot by the Western Cape Trafficking in Persons Provincial Task Team. With the N1 running through, taxis, busses and cars offer ample opportunity for human trafficking activities.

Amy Arnold, UOC’s Specialist Operative, heading the counter human trafficking initiatives, investigations and national training, was invited to train 120 attendees, mostly SAPS Officers, new recruits, hospital staff, health staff and DSD employees.

Some attendees drove all the way from Cape Town and George. As the audience grew, the training got split into two days instead of the intended one day. The immense interest to be trained was significant as it was necessary to deal with the human trafficking peaking in the sleepy village of Beaufort West.
The curriculum, compiled and presented by Amy, was conveyed during 5 classes, and included exploitation & grooming, The South African Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Act, Victim-centeredness, the finer details of statement taking and completing of forms, interviewing and standard operating procedures.

With more than a decade in law enforcement in the US, Amy’s experience includes, among other, Trainer for Police Academy; Domestic Violence Detective; Patrol Sergeant; Instructed a Train the Trainer program in Malawi for Police Officers; Participate on task teams with government to fight trafficking. She also trains law enforcement and non-profit organizations and works in the field, rescuing and supporting victims of human trafficking.

Beaufort West community really cared for their people and it was evident in the well-attended training after which their confidence was strengthened to deal with the cruel crime of human trafficking and the correct response.
