Unchain Our Children Inspires Resident-Led Change at Reddingsdaad

Pretoria West – Residents at the Reddingsdaad Kwaggaspoort community centre have taken ownership of their living environment, inspired by Unchain Our Children (UOC) to launch an exterior maintenance and beautification project.

The initiative saw a dedicated 10-member Resident-Volunteer team receive branded overall jackets and T-shirts, proudly displaying the “Fix-It-All” logo. UOC Founder and Executive Director Wayne van Onselen personally handed over the working gear, sparking visible enthusiasm among the volunteers as they committed to painting, gardening, and tackling essential upkeep tasks to uplift the premises.

This hands-on project reflects a core principle championed by UOC: the transformative power of enabling vulnerable individuals to move beyond being passive recipients of aid. When people facing hardship are actively engaged in meaningful work, it fosters purpose, dignity, and self-reliance. By working towards tangible goals and improving their own surroundings, residents experience a profound lift in the human spirit – a sense of agency and pride that purely material assistance cannot replicate.
